UN Security Council urges for de-escalation in Yemen

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council on Tuesday urged all parties in Yemen to de-escalate tensions and reaffirmed its support for efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the country.

“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed their support to the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen and their commitment to working towards lasting peace and prosperity for the Yemeni people,” the Council said in a statement.

Highlighting that “ongoing escalation, including recent developments, in Yemen are not conducive to progress,” Council members called for de-escalation and encouraged intensified diplomatic efforts by all parties and regional stakeholders.

They also emphasized their strong backing for initiatives aimed at reaching a political settlement and ultimately ending the suffering of Yemen’s population.

The statement reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, as well as support for the Presidential Leadership Council and the Government of Yemen.

Additionally, the Council condemned in the strongest terms the continued detention by Houthi forces of personnel from the United Nations system, national and international NGOs, civil society organizations, and diplomatic missions. They expressed deep concern for those detained over the years, including incidents in 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025, and since 18 December 2025.

Members reiterated that all threats against humanitarian workers are unacceptable, noting that such actions exacerbate Yemen’s already severe humanitarian crisis.
