Yemenia Airways Restarts Operations After Three-Day Halt
The airline's return to service came after instructions from Transport Minister Abdul Salam Saleh Humaid and board chairman Nasser Mahmoud, the ministry confirmed in an official statement.
Mohsen Haidara, Yemenia's deputy general manager overseeing commercial operations, revealed that flight services will launch exclusively from Aden, connecting passengers to four key cities: Riyadh, Amman, Cairo, and Jeddah.
According to Haidara, the restoration followed rigorous diplomatic engagement spearheaded by the transport minister and airline leadership with their Saudi Arabian counterparts, ultimately securing authorization to restart operations.
The suspension began Thursday when Yemen's Southern Transitional Council (STC) ordered the closure of Aden airport—the critical aviation hub for Yemeni territories not under Houthi control—which maintains connections to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan.
Aden Al-Mustaqilla, a media outlet linked to the STC, reported at that time that Saudi Arabia had halted all domestic and international air traffic involving Aden airport.
Yemen's internationally recognized government disputed this assertion, maintaining that the airport continued normal operations for air traffic.
The country has experienced a dramatic surge in hostilities since Tuesday, triggered by STC forces seizing control of Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra provinces in early December. These two territories comprise approximately half of Yemen's landmass and border Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia publicly blamed the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of "pushing STC forces to carry out military operations" near the kingdom's southern frontier in Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra. Abu Dhabi rejected the allegation.
The STC contends that consecutive Yemeni administrations have marginalized southern regions politically and economically and calls for secession. Yemeni authorities reject the claim and reaffirm their commitment to the country's unity.
