24 People Dead in Yemen Floods

(MENAFN) Catastrophic flooding in Yemen's southwestern province of Taiz has killed 24 people and battered more than 31,000 families, with financial losses surpassing $15 million since late March, local authorities announced Thursday.

Deputy Governor Moheeb al-Hakimi delivered the figures during a press conference in Taiz, with Yemen's state news agency Saba reporting that floodwaters tore through multiple districts, affecting 31,260 families and leaving a trail of destruction across critical infrastructure and livelihoods.

Al-Hakimi warned that the disasters are not isolated events, attributing the chronic vulnerability to a convergence of climate change, crumbling infrastructure, deepening food insecurity, and institutional shortcomings in early warning and emergency response systems.

The updated toll marks a sharp deterioration from figures released just days earlier. On April 14, the Yemeni government reported that flooding in Taiz had killed 22 people, left 21 others missing or injured, and displaced more than 12,000 families — figures that have since been significantly eclipsed.

The relentless rains battering Yemen since late March have triggered deaths, injuries, and sweeping damage across multiple provinces, with Taiz bearing the heaviest toll. The devastation is compounded by more than 11 years of war between government forces and the Houthi group, which has hollowed out the country's already fragile infrastructure and left millions with virtually no buffer against natural disasters.
