Flooding in Southwest Yemen Leaves Twenty-Four Dead
Deputy Governor Moheeb al-Hakimi said during a press briefing that multiple districts across Taiz were hit by the floods, which resulted in widespread destruction and displacement. He reported that 31,260 families were affected, with significant damage across residential areas and infrastructure, as cited by Yemen’s state news agency Saba.
Hakimi added that the flooding has caused extensive losses across several sectors and warned that the situation reflects broader vulnerabilities in the region. He linked the severity of the disaster to climate-related factors, weak infrastructure, food insecurity, and limited early warning and emergency response systems.
Earlier updates from authorities indicated lower casualty figures and reported missing or injured persons alongside large-scale displacement. Since then, the toll has risen as conditions have worsened.
The region has experienced sustained heavy rainfall since late March, leading to repeated flooding incidents across multiple provinces, with Taiz among the hardest hit.
Officials say Yemen’s already fragile infrastructure has significantly amplified the impact of the floods, compounding humanitarian challenges in a country affected by more than a decade of ongoing conflict.
