Yemen Warns Proxy Control of Bab al-Mandeb Could Endanger Global Maritime
Speaking on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Türkiye, Shaya al-Zindani emphasized that Yemen’s geographic position gives it a critical role in safeguarding international maritime routes and stability.
He said that instability in the region would have far-reaching consequences beyond Yemen itself. “Any disruption in the security situation will directly affect regional stability, as well as the safety of international navigation and trade,” he stated.
Al-Zindani cautioned that ongoing regional tensions have highlighted the importance of both the Red Sea corridor and Yemen’s strategic location overlooking Bab al-Mandeb, warning that the area could become a major global security concern if influenced by external proxy forces.
He accused the Houthis of acting in coordination with Iran and suggested that they could be used to threaten key shipping lanes. He also claimed that Iran had recently made threats concerning maritime chokepoints, including Bab al-Mandeb, linking this to wider regional escalation risks.
The Yemeni minister further stressed that such developments could have implications for international peace and security if left unchecked.
Beyond security concerns, he also commented on relations with Türkiye, describing them as long-standing and fraternal, and expressing Yemen’s interest in expanding cooperation in various sectors. He said Türkiye has consistently supported the Yemeni people and that both sides are working to strengthen existing agreements and open new areas of collaboration.
Bab al-Mandeb remains a highly strategic maritime passage connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, separating the Arabian Peninsula from the Horn of Africa and serving as a key route for global trade.
