Yemeni Press Groups, EU Call for Release of Detained Journalists

(MENAFN) The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate and the European Union Delegation to Yemen have jointly urged the release of nine journalists currently held in Yemen, according to reports.

As stated by reports, both parties issued their calls on Sunday in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day, emphasizing the need to protect press freedom and end detentions of media workers.

The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate said the media environment in the country has become increasingly restrictive and unsafe, citing a combination of security risks, professional pressure, and economic difficulties affecting journalists.

According to general accounts, the union stated that eight journalists are being held by the Houthi group, while one additional journalist is detained by authorities in Aden under the Yemeni government.

The syndicate called for an end to what it described as violations against journalists, including arbitrary detention, politically motivated legal action, and lack of access to medical care for detainees.

The EU Delegation also expressed concern over conditions facing journalists in Yemen, stating that media workers are exposed to detention without due process, intimidation, and other forms of harassment.

It called for the immediate release of all detained journalists and urged full respect for press freedom across the country.

As stated by reports, Yemen has experienced ongoing instability since the outbreak of conflict more than a decade ago, though levels of active fighting have decreased since a period of reduced violence began in April 2022.
